THE POWWOW GAFF
Native American-Inspired Fishing Gaff DIY Kit
A unique piece of traditional fishing ingenuity you can build yourself!
I discovered the inspiration for this unusual little fishing tool while visiting a Native American powwow. At one of the vendor booths, I came across a small, handcrafted fish gaff unlike anything I’d seen before.
The person at the booth explained that this compact fishing implement was used to retrieve fish from stone weirs and in improvised fishing situations. I immediately thought it was one of the coolest little survival tools I’d ever encountered—and an even cooler hands-on bushcraft project!
So, we recreated it.
Introducing the POWWOW GAFF DIY KIT—a simple, functional, Native American-inspired fishing tool you assemble yourself using a small steel gaff hook, a pine wood handle, and paracord.
The finished tool is compact enough to fit in your hand, yet offers a fascinating look at the resourcefulness behind traditional and improvised fishing implements.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
Each kit contains the materials needed to build your own Powwow Gaff:
Steel gaff hook – A small, curved metal hook designed for the project.
Pine wood handle – A pre-cut wooden handle ready for shaping and assembly.
Paracord – For wrapping the handle and securing the gaff.
Wooden securing pegs – To help anchor the cord and hold the assembly together.
Illustrated instructions – Hand-drawn, step-by-step directions for completing your project.
BUILD IT YOURSELF!
Part of the fun is making it your own.
Using the included instructions, you’ll shape the pine handle to fit the hook, secure the steel gaff in position, install the wooden pegs, and tightly wrap the handle with paracord.
When you’re finished, you’ll have a unique, handcrafted fishing implement and the satisfaction of having built it yourself.
A PROJECT WITH A STORY
What makes this kit special isn’t just the finished tool. It’s the story behind it.
Inspired by an implement I discovered at a Native American powwow, the Powwow Gaff is a reminder that some of the most interesting wilderness tools are also the simplest.
It’s a great project for bushcraft enthusiasts, survival instructors, outdoor educators, homeschool families, and anyone who enjoys learning traditional outdoor skills through hands-on projects.
Simple materials. Clever design. A fascinating piece of fishing history brought back to life.
Note: This is a modern recreation inspired by a tool encountered at a Native American powwow, not a verified historical reproduction or an item represented as being made by a Native American artisan. Adult supervision is recommended during assembly and handling of the sharp steel hook.
